A timeless classic from Tampa’s iconic Columbia Restaurant, the 1905 Salad is a perfect mix of crisp lettuce, savory ham, Swiss cheese, tangy olives, and a zesty homemade dressing. Every bite carries a taste of tradition and rich history.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1/2 cup julienned baked ham
  • 1/2 cup julienned Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup green Spanish olives, halved
  • 1/4 cup grated Romano cheese
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Salad: In a large salad bowl, combine chopped iceberg lettuce, tomato wedges, julienned ham, Swiss cheese, and green Spanish olives.
  • Make the Dressing: In a separate bowl, whisk together olive oil, minced garlic, dried oregano, white wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until emulsified.
  • Combine and Toss: Pour the dressing over the salad and toss gently to ensure every ingredient is evenly coated.
  • Finish with Romano Cheese: Sprinkle grated Romano cheese over the top.
  • Serve Immediately: Serve fresh for the best flavor and crunch.

Notes

1️⃣ Use Fresh Ingredients: The crispness of iceberg lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and quality Swiss cheese make a big difference in flavor and texture. Freshness is key!

2️⃣ Emulsify the Dressing Well: Whisk the dressing ingredients thoroughly to ensure a smooth, balanced flavor in every bite.

3️⃣ Serve Immediately: The salad tastes best when served right after tossing with the dressing to maintain its crunch and vibrant flavors.
