Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
- ½ cup granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold, cubed
- ⅓ cup milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Filling:
Peel and slice the apples into ¼-inch pieces. In a large bowl, toss them with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice until evenly coated. - Prepare the Dutch Oven:
Lightly grease a 5-6 quart Dutch oven with butter or cooking spray. Pour the apple mixture evenly into the bottom. - Make the Topping:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it forms coarse crumbs. Gradually add milk, stirring just until a soft dough forms. - Assemble the Cobbler:
Spoon the dough over the apple mixture in dollops, leaving some gaps for steam to escape. The dough will spread as it bakes. - Bake the Cobbler:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the Dutch oven (with its lid off) in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. - Cool and Serve:
Let the cobbler rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence!
Notes
- Choose the Right Apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to ensure they hold their shape and provide a balance to the sweetness of the topping. Avoid soft varieties like Red Delicious, which can become mushy when baked.
- Prevent a Soggy Topping: Ensure the Dutch oven is preheated before placing the cobbler inside, and keep the topping dough thick enough to bake up light and fluffy rather than dense.
- Customize the Flavor: Add optional ingredients like a splash of vanilla extract, a pinch of lemon zest, or a handful of chopped nuts to elevate the flavor and texture of your cobbler.
