Description

Southern candied yams baked until tender in a buttery brown sugar glaze with warm spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 sweet potatoes (about 1.5 pounds), peeled and sliced
  • 5 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Peel, rinse, and slice sweet potatoes into 1/2 to 1 inch rounds.
  3. Grease a baking dish with butter and arrange potatoes evenly.
  4. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Stir in sugars, spices, and vanilla until smooth.
  6. Pour glaze over sweet potatoes and cover with foil.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove foil, stir gently, increase heat to 425°F.
  9. Bake uncovered for 15 minutes until tender and glazed.

Notes

  1. Slice sweet potatoes evenly for consistent cooking.
  2. Let the dish rest before serving so the glaze thickens.
