A heartwarming classic bursting with flavors, this casserole combines ground beef, pasta, and gooey cheese into a family-friendly dish. Easy to customize, perfect for busy nights!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 cup reserved pasta water
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Cook Pasta: Boil macaroni in salted water until al dente. Reserve 1/4 cup pasta water, then drain and set aside.
- Prepare Meat Mixture: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until fragrant. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
- Season and Sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes to blend flavors.
- Combine with Pasta: In a large bowl, mix cooked pasta, reserved pasta water, and half of the shredded cheeses with the beef mixture.
- Assemble: Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Top evenly with remaining cheeses.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake casserole uncovered for 20 minutes or until cheese is bubbly. Optional: Broil for 2-3 minutes for a golden topping.
- Serve: Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with a fresh salad or garlic bread.
Notes
- Prevent Dryness: To keep the casserole moist, ensure the beef mixture has enough sauce, and consider adding reserved pasta water or a splash of broth. Cover with foil during baking to lock in moisture, uncovering in the final minutes for a golden cheese topping.
- Cheese Variety: For an elevated flavor profile, mix cheeses. Use sharp cheddar for boldness, mozzarella for creaminess, and optional pepper jack or Monterey Jack for a spicy kick.
- Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole a day ahead and refrigerate. Before baking, let it come to room temperature, or bake directly with an extended cooking time, ensuring it’s heated through. Great for busy schedules and meal prepping!
