Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 can cherry pie filling (or 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 2 tbsp milk (for glaze)
Instructions
1️⃣ Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
2️⃣ In a large bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until a soft dough forms.
3️⃣ Press 2/3 of the dough evenly into the prepared pan to form the crust.
4️⃣ Spread the cherry pie filling evenly over the crust layer.
5️⃣ Crumble the remaining dough over the cherry layer.
6️⃣ Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Let cool completely.
7️⃣ For the glaze, mix powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled bars.
8️⃣ Slice into squares and serve!
Notes
1️⃣ Use the Right Cherries: If using fresh cherries instead of canned, ensure they are pitted and slightly sweetened. Add 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch to prevent excess moisture from making the crust soggy.
2️⃣ Chill Before Slicing: Let the bars cool completely before cutting to ensure clean, even slices and to allow the glaze to set properly.
3️⃣ Customize the Crust: For added texture and flavor, mix in chopped almonds or oats into the crumb topping layer.
