Craving a sweet treat that’s both chewy and gooey? These Chocolate Chip Caramel Bars have the perfect combination of rich chocolate, soft caramel, and a crunchy cookie base. They’re quick to make and impossible to resist!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 12 oz soft caramel squares (melted)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix melted butter with both sugars until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly incorporate the dry mixture into the wet ingredients until just combined.
- Fold in 1 cup of the chocolate chips, leaving ½ cup for later.
- Press half of the dough into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.
- Melt the caramel squares in a microwave-safe bowl with a splash of cream or water. Pour the melted caramel over the dough layer and spread it out.
- Drop spoonfuls of the remaining dough over the caramel, trying to cover most of it, and sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the caramel is bubbling.
- Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting to help set the caramel.
Notes
- Caramel Layer: Be cautious when melting and spreading the caramel, as it can burn quickly. Ensure it’s evenly distributed over the dough layer for the perfect gooey texture in every bite.
- Dough Coverage: When adding the second layer of dough, it’s okay if the caramel isn’t fully covered. The gaps allow some caramel to peek through, creating delicious, gooey pockets.
- Cooling Time: Let the bars cool completely before cutting to allow the caramel to set. This ensures clean slices and prevents the bars from falling apart.
