Description

Savory, tender beef with a crispy finish served on a bed of fluffy rice, complemented by fresh vegetables and a drizzle of umami-packed sauce. Comfort food with a crunch!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine rice (or brown rice for a healthier option)
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Optional: sesame seeds, chili paste, or a fried egg for garnish

Instructions

  • Marinate the Beef: Combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, sugar, garlic, and ginger in a bowl. Add the beef slices, mix well, and marinate for 30 minutes.
  • Prepare the Vegetables: While the beef marinates, slice and prepare the vegetables. Keep them ready for stir-frying later.
  • Coat the Beef: Sprinkle cornstarch over the marinated beef and toss to coat evenly. This step ensures the beef gets a crispy texture when cooked.
  • Cook the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches, cooking for 2-3 minutes per side until crispy and browned. Remove and set aside.
  • Stir-fry the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add a touch more oil if needed. Toss in the bell pepper and carrot, stir-frying for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  • Assemble the Bowl: Start with a generous portion of rice in each bowl. Top with crispy beef, sautéed vegetables, and green onions.
  • Garnish and Serve: Drizzle extra soy sauce, sprinkle sesame seeds, or add a dollop of chili paste. For a richer touch, place a fried egg on top. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Slice Beef Thinly for Maximum Crispiness: To achieve the perfect crispy texture, ensure the beef is sliced as thinly as possible against the grain. This helps it cook evenly and quickly, giving you that ideal crunch.
  • Cook in Small Batches: Overcrowding the pan will cause the beef to steam rather than crisp. Cook the beef in small batches to maintain the heat and achieve a golden-brown, crispy finish.
  • Balance the Sauce: Adjust the seasoning to taste before serving. If the dish feels too salty, balance it with a touch of sugar or lime juice. For added depth, include a few drops of fish sauce or a pinch of chili flakes.
