Description

Tender cinnamon-spiced Fuji apples cook beneath a buttery brown sugar oat topping in this easy Crock Pot Apple Crisp. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for a cozy slow cooker dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 Fuji apples, peeled, cored, and sliced evenly
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for serving, optional

Instructions

  1. Lightly coat a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker insert with nonstick cooking spray or add a slow-cooker liner.
  2. Place the sliced apples in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Transfer the seasoned apples to the slow cooker and spread them into an even layer.
  5. In a clean mixing bowl, stir together the brown sugar, old-fashioned oats, and all-purpose flour.
  6. Add the cold butter cubes and cut them into the oat mixture with two forks, clean fingertips, or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form.
  7. Spread the oat topping evenly and loosely over the apples without packing it down.
  8. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours without opening the lid.
  9. Check an apple slice near the center with a fork. It should feel tender but still hold its shape.
  10. Switch the slow cooker to warm, remove the lid, and let the apple crisp rest uncovered for 30 minutes.
  11. Spoon the warm apple crisp into bowls and serve with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

  1. For the best texture, use firm apples such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Braeburn, or Granny Smith.
  2. Cut the apples into evenly sized slices so they cook at the same rate.
  3. Use old-fashioned oats rather than quick or instant oats, which can become soft or pasty.
  4. Keep the butter cold until you mix the topping so the crumble forms distinct crumbs.
  5. Avoid lifting the lid while the dessert cooks because each peek can add about 30 minutes to the cooking time.
  6. To make the recipe ahead, prepare the apple mixture and topping separately, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
  7. When cooking the recipe straight from the refrigerator, allow extra cooking time and check the apples in 15-minute intervals.
  8. When doubling the recipe, increase the cooking time as needed and consider cooking the apples briefly before adding the topping.
  9. Every slow cooker heats differently, so begin checking the dessert during the uncovered resting period after 15 minutes.
  10. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  11. Reheat individual servings in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds, or warm them in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes for a crisper topping.
