Description
This creamy, cheesy casserole combines tender pierogies, smoky kielbasa, and a rich, velvety sauce for the ultimate comfort food. Easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser, it’s perfect for any occasion!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (16 oz) package frozen pierogies (potato and cheese-filled)
- 1 lb kielbasa, sliced into bite-sized pieces
- 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth (low-sodium preferred)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the crockpot)
- Optional: Chopped fresh parsley or chives for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Slice the kielbasa into small pieces. If the pierogies are frozen solid, allow them to thaw slightly for easier layering. Soften the cream cheese for smoother mixing.
- Layer in the Crockpot: Grease the crockpot with olive oil or butter. Add a layer of pierogies at the bottom, followed by a layer of sliced kielbasa. Repeat until all the pierogies and kielbasa are used.
- Make the Sauce: In a bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, broth, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until well mixed and creamy.
- Assemble: Pour the sauce evenly over the layers in the crockpot, ensuring the pierogies and kielbasa are fully coated.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. Stir gently halfway through cooking for even distribution.
- Final Touch: In the last 30 minutes, sprinkle additional shredded cheddar cheese on top for a gooey, golden finish. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives before serving.
Notes
- Thaw Pierogies Slightly: While frozen pierogies work, letting them thaw for a few minutes ensures easier layering and even cooking. This helps prevent sogginess or uneven texture.
- Stir Gently During Cooking: Stir the casserole gently halfway through to evenly distribute the sauce and flavors without breaking the pierogies or mashing them.
- Don’t Skip the Final Cheese Topping: Adding shredded cheese in the last 30 minutes creates a gooey, golden layer that enhances both the flavor and presentation of the dish.
