Description

Rich, fudgy chocolate brownies topped with a decadent coconut-pecan frosting. A perfect treat for chocolate lovers and a twist on the classic German chocolate cake!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Brownie Base:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 oz German’s sweet chocolate (or semi-sweet chocolate)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt

For the Coconut-Pecan Topping:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven & Prepare Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease it well.
  • Make the Brownie Base
    • In a saucepan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
    • In a large bowl, whisk sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Gradually mix in the melted chocolate mixture.
    • Sift in flour and salt, gently folding until just combined. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake Brownies
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let cool completely.
  • Prepare the Topping
    • In a saucepan, combine evaporated milk, brown sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 5-7 minutes).
    • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Let the mixture cool slightly.
  • Assemble & Finalize
    • Spread the coconut-pecan topping evenly over the cooled brownies.
    • Bake for an additional 10-12 minutes to set the topping. Cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

  • Don’t Overbake the Brownies: Keep an eye on the baking time to ensure the brownies stay fudgy. A toothpick should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter. Overbaking can make them dry.
  • Cook the Topping Until Thickened: When preparing the coconut-pecan topping, stir constantly and cook until it reaches a thick, creamy consistency. This ensures the topping sets properly and doesn’t become runny.
  • Let Everything Cool Before Assembling: Allow the brownies to cool completely before spreading the topping. This prevents the topping from melting into the brownies and keeps the layers distinct.
