Description

A comforting dish that combines tender beef patties with rich onion gravy for the ultimate home-cooked meal. Perfect for weeknights or family dinners!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce. Gently mix until combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into round patties.
  • Cook the Patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden and softened, about 7–8 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to combine. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the remaining Worcestershire sauce and let the gravy simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine: Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over them. Simmer for 2–3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve: Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, with extra gravy spooned on top.

Notes

  • Choose the Right Ground Beef: Opt for 80/20 ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat) for juicy and flavorful patties. Leaner beef may result in drier patties, so adjust accordingly if using alternatives.
  • Don’t Overwork the Meat: Gently mix the ingredients for the patties to avoid making them tough. Overmixing compresses the meat, leading to a denser texture.
  • Simmer for Flavor: Allow the patties to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes. This not only keeps the meat moist but also infuses the beef with the savory onion gravy for maximum flavor.
