Description
Homemade Buttercream Frosting is a creamy, fluffy, and customizable icing that brings flavor, beauty, and texture to cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Made with simple ingredients like butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla, this classic frosting is easy to whip up and perfect for decorating or spreading with ease.
Ingredients
-
1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
-
4 cups (480 g) powdered sugar, sifted
-
1 tbsp (15 ml) vanilla extract
-
1 packet powdered milk (approx. ¼–⅓ cup or 32–43 g)
-
Optional: 1–2 tbsp milk or cream (to adjust consistency)
Instructions
-
Beat the softened butter in a mixer on medium speed for 2–3 minutes, until pale and creamy.
-
Add the vanilla extract and mix for another minute.
-
Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed to avoid splatter. Scrape down the sides as needed.
-
Add the powdered milk and mix until incorporated.
-
Increase to medium-high speed and whip for 3–5 minutes until the frosting is fluffy and smooth.
-
Adjust consistency if needed: add a splash of milk to loosen, or more powdered sugar to thicken.
-
Use immediately for frosting or store in an airtight container.
Notes
Sift powdered sugar to avoid lumps.
Powdered milk adds creaminess and structure—ideal for piping.
For extra flavor, use almond, lemon, or coffee extracts.
Can be made ahead: refrigerate up to 1 week or freeze up to 3 months. Re-whip before using.
To smooth air bubbles, mix on low speed at the end or press against the bowl with a spatula.
