Description
Skip the store-bought cans and make your own creamy, rich condensed milk at home! Perfect for baking, desserts, coffee, and more, this DIY version is simple, delicious, and free from preservatives.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (480ml) whole milk (or coconut milk for a dairy-free version)
- ⅔ cup (135g) granulated sugar (or sugar substitute)
- 2 tbsp (30g) unsalted butter (optional, for extra creaminess)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
1️⃣ In a medium saucepan, combine milk and sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
2️⃣ Heat over medium-low, stirring constantly, until it starts to steam (but not boil).
3️⃣ Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes, or until the mixture reduces by half and thickens.
4️⃣ If using, add butter and vanilla extract, stirring until fully combined.
5️⃣ Remove from heat and let it cool. It will thicken more as it cools.
6️⃣ Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
Notes
1️⃣ Low & Slow is Key – Keep the heat low while simmering to prevent burning or curdling. Stir occasionally to ensure even reduction and a smooth texture.
2️⃣ Consistency Check – The mixture should reduce by about half and have a syrupy, pourable consistency. It will thicken more as it cools, so don’t overcook it!
3️⃣ Storage Matters – Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months. Stir well before using, as slight separation may occur.
