Description
Stovetop homemade hot chocolate made with real chocolate, cocoa powder, and milk for a rich and cozy winter drink.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add milk, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, brown sugar, and salt to a saucepan over low-medium heat.
- Whisk occasionally as the milk warms and the chocolate melts until smooth and steamy, about 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Serve warm with whipped cream or marshmallows.
Notes
- Whole milk gives the creamiest texture, but low-fat milk works well.
- Dark or milk chocolate chips can replace semi-sweet.
- Adjust brown sugar to taste.
- Store cooled hot chocolate in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave and only reheat once.
- This recipe works well in a slow cooker for serving a crowd.
