Description
A hearty baked dip inspired by classic sloppy joe sandwiches, made with ground beef, peppers, onion, savory sauce, and topped with melted cheddar cheese for the perfect party appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds extra lean ground beef
- 2 green bell peppers, diced
- 1 onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Cayenne pepper, to taste
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
Instructions
- Dice the bell peppers and onion and mince the garlic.
- Place ground beef, bell peppers, onion, garlic, flour, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a heavy pot.
- Cook over medium-high heat while stirring and breaking up the beef until moisture evaporates and the mixture begins to brown, about 15 minutes.
- Stir in chicken broth, ketchup, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture becomes thick, about 45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven broiler and position the rack about 6 inches from the heat source.
- Transfer the mixture to an oven-safe pan.
- Top with half of the shredded Cheddar cheese and lightly stir it into the dip.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.
- Broil until the cheese is melted, browned, and the dip is hot and bubbly, about 5 minutes.
Notes
- You can substitute 2 cups of water instead of chicken broth if desired.
- The dip can be finished in a 425°F oven instead of using the broiler.
- You can keep the dip warm on the stove for guests to serve themselves.
- Serve with toasted baguette slices, crackers, or bread for dipping.
