Description

Inside out egg rolls provide all the flavors of traditional egg rolls but in a lighter, healthier version. The dish features savory protein, crisp vegetables, and a flavorful marinade without the deep-frying process. It’s a simple, customizable meal that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chicken or beef (or tofu/tempeh for a vegetarian option)

  • 2 cups shredded cabbage

  • 1 cup shredded carrots

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional toppings: avocado, cilantro, sesame seeds, or shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the Protein
In a large pan, cook your chosen protein (chicken, beef, tofu, or tempeh) over medium heat until browned and fully cooked.

  2. Sauté the Vegetables
Add oil to the same pan. Sauté shredded cabbage, carrots, and onions until tender, but still crunchy. This usually takes about 5-6 minutes.

  3. Mix Everything Together
Add the cooked protein back to the pan. Stir to combine with the vegetables.

  4. Add the Seasonings
Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and rice vinegar. Let it simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

  5. Assemble and Serve
Serve the mixture as is, or in lettuce wraps, over rice, or as part of a salad. Top with avocado, cilantro, or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken or beef with tofu or tempeh.

You can skip the rice and serve the mixture in lettuce wraps for a low-carb option.

Add a spicy sauce or teriyaki sauce for extra flavor.
