Description

These French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are a cheesy, savoury mashup of the classic sandwich and rich French onion soup. Made with caramelised onions, juicy ground beef, and melted Swiss cheese on toasted buns, this 30-minute recipe is cozy, satisfying, and perfect for busy weeknights or game-day gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 g (1 lb) ground beef (85% lean)

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) olive oil

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Worcestershire sauce

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) soy sauce

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) dried thyme

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • 120 g (1 cup) shredded Swiss cheese

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute.

2. Cook the Beef
Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up, until browned through. Drain excess fat.

3. Season
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.

4. Toast the Buns
Lightly toast hamburger buns until crisp.

5. Assemble the Sandwiches
Spoon beef mixture onto the bottom bun, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and close with the top bun. For extra melty cheese, broil for 1 minute before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Don’t rush the onions—low and slow for the best caramelized flavor.

Substitute with Gruyère, mozzarella, or provolone if Swiss isn’t your favorite.

For a vegetarian version, use plant-based crumbles or lentils.

Broiling after assembling gives an ultra-gooey finish.
