Ingredients
2¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
¾ cup granulated sugar
¾ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 bag (14 oz) caramels
5 oz evaporated milk
½ cup peanut butter
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
In a small bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Gradually add flour mixture; stir in chocolate chips.
Spread half of the cookie dough into the prepared pan and bake for 8–10 minutes, until lightly golden.
In a double boiler, melt caramels with evaporated milk; stir in peanut butter until smooth.
Pour caramel mixture evenly over the baked cookie base.
Drop remaining cookie dough by spoonfuls over the caramel layer.
Bake 15–20 minutes more, or until golden brown and bubbling.
Cool completely before slicing into bars.
Notes
Chill before slicing for neat, clean squares.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
Reheat slightly before serving to restore gooey texture.
Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for a salted caramel version.
