Description

The Steak Grilled Cheese Sandwich is the perfect blend of steakhouse indulgence and grilled cheese comfort. Tender, seasoned steak strips, golden sautéed onions, and melty mozzarella are layered between buttery Italian bread slices and grilled to crispy, cheesy perfection. It’s a hearty, irresistible sandwich for any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz flank or patio steak (340 g)

  • 1¼ cups sweet yellow onion, thinly sliced (150 g)

  • 1½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil (22 ml)

  • 1 tbsp salted butter (14 g)

  • 1½ tsp kosher salt, divided (7.5 g)

  • 1½ tsp fresh cracked black pepper, divided (7.5 g)

  • 8 slices Italian bread

  • 2 tbsp softened salted butter (28 g)

  • 2¾ cups freshly grated mozzarella cheese (275 g)

Instructions

  • Season Steak: Rub steak with ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper. Let rest at room temperature.

  • Sauté Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high. Add onions, season with ½ tsp salt and pepper, and cook for 5–7 minutes until golden. Set aside.

  • Cook Steak: In the same pan, sear steak 3–4 minutes per side. Let rest 5 minutes, then slice into thin strips.

  • Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Layer 4 slices (butter-side down) with ⅓ cup mozzarella, steak, sautéed onions, another ⅓ cup mozzarella, and top with remaining bread (butter-side up).

  • Grill: Cook sandwiches in skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, until bread is golden and cheese is melted. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

Use freshly grated mozzarella for better melting.

Let steak rest before slicing to retain juices.

Press sandwiches gently with a spatula for a crisp crust.

Add mushrooms or bell peppers for variety.
