Description

A true New York City classic, the Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a delicious mix of seasoned ground beef, melted American cheese, crisp veggies, and zesty condiments, all served on a toasted hero roll. A bodega staple that’s easy to make and packed with iconic NYC flavor!

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 slices American cheese
1 hero roll (or sub roll)
1/2 cup shredded lettuce
1 tomato, sliced
2 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp cooking oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Beef & Onions: Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent. Add ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and chop it into smaller pieces while cooking. Cook until browned.

2️⃣ Melt the Cheese: Place slices of American cheese on top of the beef and let it melt. Stir gently to combine melted cheese with the beef and onions.

3️⃣ Prepare the Roll: Slice the hero roll lengthwise and toast lightly on the skillet until golden.

4️⃣ Assemble the Sandwich: Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the toasted roll. Add the cheesy beef mixture, followed by shredded lettuce and tomato slices.

5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy: Close the sandwich, cut in half, and serve warm.
