Description

These Orange Cream Scones are flaky, buttery, and packed with fresh citrus flavor. Finished with a sweet homemade orange glaze, they make a perfect breakfast or brunch treat.


Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream plus more for brushing
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest.
  3. Cut cold butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  4. Whisk egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  5. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until just combined.
  6. Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into a one inch thick circle.
  7. Cut dough into 8 triangles and place on prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops with heavy cream.
  9. Bake for 15 to 16 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Whisk together melted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, orange juice, and orange zest for the glaze.
  11. Drizzle glaze over cooled scones and serve.

Notes

  1. Use cold butter for flaky layers.
  2. Do not overmix the dough.
