- 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour

- 5 ounces red, white, and blue sprinkles
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
- Red gel food coloring
- Blue gel food coloring
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Beat butter, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla until creamy.
- Mix in flour and salt until dough forms.
- Roll dough into 1-inch balls and coat with patriotic sprinkles.
- Place cookies on baking sheets and press an indentation into the center of each.
- Bake for 10 minutes until lightly golden.
- Cool cookies completely on a wire rack.
- Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and corn syrup until smooth.
- Divide icing into three bowls and tint red and blue colors.
- Spoon icing into the thumbprint centers and let harden before serving.
Notes
- Do not overbake the cookies or they may become dry.
- Allow icing to harden fully before storing.
- Freeze cookies with parchment paper between layers for best results.
