Description

A classic American diner favorite made with juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and a tangy homemade sauce grilled between buttery rye bread slices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons pickle relish
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Slowly cook sliced onions in butter over low heat until golden and soft
  2. Form ground beef into thin patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned
  3. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, and spices to make the sauce
  4. Butter bread slices and assemble with sauce, cheese, onions, and beef patties
  5. Grill sandwiches until bread is golden and cheese is fully melted

Notes

  1. Use a cast iron skillet for the best crust
  2. Cook onions slowly to bring out natural sweetness
  3. Secret sauce can be made up to 5 days ahead
  4. Reheat leftovers in a skillet for best texture
