Description

A delightful mashup of two classic comfort foods! This pizza grilled cheese combines gooey melted cheese, savory pizza sauce, and your favorite toppings between crispy, buttery bread. A perfect meal for any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of sourdough or Italian bread
  • 2 tbsp pizza or marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 6 slices pepperoni (optional, or substitute with veggies for a vegetarian version)
  • 1 tbsp butter or mayonnaise (for grilling)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Optional toppings: diced onions, sliced mushrooms, olives, or bell peppers

Instructions

  • Preheat a skillet over medium-low heat.
  • Spread butter or mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice. Place one slice, butter-side down, on a cutting board.
  • Spread pizza sauce evenly over the unbuttered side.
  • Sprinkle half the mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Add pepperoni or toppings of choice. Sprinkle Italian seasoning.
  • Add the remaining cheese and top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up. Press gently.
  • Place the sandwich in the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Flip carefully using a spatula, and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Cover the pan briefly if the cheese needs extra help melting.
  • Once the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted, remove from the skillet. Let cool slightly, then cut and serve!

Notes

  • Bread Choice Matters: Use sturdy bread like sourdough or Italian to hold up against the gooey cheese and sauce without getting soggy. Make sure the slices are not too thick for even toasting.
  • Cook Low and Slow: Keep the skillet at medium-low heat to allow the bread to toast evenly and the cheese to melt perfectly without burning the bread. Covering the skillet can help trap heat for better cheese melting.
  • Don’t Overload Toppings: Keep the fillings balanced. Too many toppings can make the sandwich hard to grill evenly and might cause it to fall apart when flipping.
