Description

This Royal Purple Velvet Cake is a stunning twist on the classic red velvet, featuring moist cocoa-kissed layers and a dreamy vanilla cream cheese frosting. Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any celebration that needs a pop of color and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 3 cups fine flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1⅓ cups buttermilk, room temperature

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 4 large eggs, room temperature

  • 2 heaping tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • A dash of purple liquid food coloring (adjust to desired shade)

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp white vinegar

For the Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 8 oz unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour and cocoa powder.

  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy (about 3 minutes).

  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each. Stir in vanilla.

  5. Add the flour mixture and buttermilk in alternating batches, starting and ending with flour.

  6. Add purple food coloring to reach the desired color.

  7. In a small bowl, combine baking soda and vinegar; quickly fold into the batter.

  8. Divide batter between pans and smooth tops.

  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  10. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting:

  1. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until fluffy.

  3. Stir in vanilla extract.

  4. Frost cooled cake layers and decorate as desired.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients mix more evenly and help the cake rise properly.

Use extra food coloring to compensate for color fading during baking.

For cupcakes, bake at 350°F for 18–22 minutes.

Can be made ahead: wrap cooled layers and refrigerate or freeze until ready to frost.

Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze slices for up to 2 months.
