This creamy layered scalloped potatoes recipe delivers tender potatoes baked in a rich sauce with a lightly golden top.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a baking dish
  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes and onion
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour until smooth
  4. Slowly whisk in milk and cook until thickened, then season
  5. Layer potatoes, onions, sauce, and cheese in the dish
  6. Cover and bake for 45 minutes, uncover and bake 15 minutes more
