Description

Tender, smoky beef brisket seasoned with a savory dry rub, slow-cooked until it shreds easily, and finished with rich barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 to 3 pounds beef brisket
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke flavoring
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 bottle (18 ounces) barbecue sauce

Instructions

  1. Combine the thyme, paprika, black pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and cumin in a small bowl.
  2. Pat the brisket dry, then rub the spice mixture across the top and sides of the meat.
  3. Pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of a 7-quart slow cooker.
  4. Place the seasoned brisket in the slow cooker with the rubbed side facing up.
  5. Pour the liquid smoke and Worcestershire sauce over the brisket.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until the brisket separates easily with a fork.
  7. Carefully transfer the cooked brisket to a large platter.
  8. Remove and discard the softened fat from the underside of the brisket.
  9. Shred the brisket with two forks and remove any large fatty pieces.
  10. Return the shredded beef to the slow cooker and pour the barbecue sauce over it.
  11. Stir gently, cover, and cook for another 30 minutes, or until the sauce becomes hot.
  12. Serve the brisket warm with your favorite sides or on toasted sandwich buns.

Notes

  1. Choose a brisket that fits comfortably inside a 7-quart slow cooker.
  2. Cook the brisket on low for the most tender texture.
  3. If the meat resists shredding, continue cooking for 30 to 60 minutes.
  4. Use smoky, sweet, spicy, or tangy barbecue sauce according to your preference.
  5. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  6. Freeze meal-size portions for up to 3 months.
  7. Nutrition values represent reasonable estimates per serving.
