Description

This crock pot Teriyaki Chicken recipe only takes 5 minutes to prepare. Slow cooker teriyaki chicken is a flavorful main dish, perfect for busy weeknights! Serve with stir fry vegetables and fried rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds chicken breasts
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¾ cup soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup mirin
  • ½ teaspoon powdered ginger (or minced ginger)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (or minced garlic)
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder (or ½ cup finely diced onion)
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Grease the container of a large slow cooker.
  2. Add the sauce ingredients in the order listed into the prepared slow cooker and whisk to combine. Do not add the cornstarch and water mixture.
  3. Place chicken breasts into the slow cooker and turn to coat.
  4. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours, or until chicken is easily shredded with a fork. Turn once halfway through cooking if you can.
  5. Remove chicken from the slow cooker and place into a medium serving dish. Do not discard the sauce.
  6. Shred the chicken with two forks. Cover and set aside.
  7. Set a fine mesh strainer over a 4-quart saucepan and carefully pour the sauce through the strainer into the saucepan.
  8. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl and add to the sauce, stirring or whisking until fully incorporated.
  9. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened.
  10. Mix half of the sauce into the shredded chicken and save the remaining half of the sauce for serving.
  11. Serve with rice, stir-fried vegetables, or your favorite Asian salad.

Notes

  1. Chicken thighs are a great substitute for chicken breasts.
  2. Use gluten-free soy sauce to make this recipe gluten-free.
  3. Granulated sugar or brown sugar are good substitutes for honey.
  4. Tapioca flour or arrowroot powder are good substitutes for cornstarch.
  5. You can use fresh diced onion, minced garlic, or grated fresh ginger instead of powdered spices.
  6. Mirin is a key ingredient; do not omit or substitute it for the best teriyaki flavor.
  7. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
