Description
A sweet twist on sushi that blends the delicate artistry of Japanese cuisine with the creamy, fruity indulgence of strawberry shortcake. Perfect for parties, celebrations, or as a fun dessert at home!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup sushi rice
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 sheet nori (optional for binding; can be omitted for an all-dessert experience)
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup sweetened cream cheese or mascarpone
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional toppings: drizzle of melted chocolate, chopped nuts, or shredded coconut
Instructions
- Prepare the rice: Rinse sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook according to package instructions. While warm, mix with vinegar, sugar, and salt. Let cool completely.
- Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine cream cheese or mascarpone with vanilla extract. Adjust sweetness if needed by adding sugar or honey.
- Assemble the roll: Lay a sheet of nori (if using) shiny side down on a bamboo mat or parchment paper. Spread a thin, even layer of rice over the nori, leaving an inch at the top edge for sealing.
- Add the filling: Place sliced strawberries in a horizontal line near the center. Spread or pipe the cream cheese mixture on top of the strawberries.
- Roll the sushi: Carefully lift the bamboo mat or parchment and roll tightly, pressing gently to secure the roll. Seal with a dab of water if needed.
- Slice the roll: Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into bite-sized pieces, wiping the blade clean between cuts for neat slices.
- Decorate and serve: Arrange on a plate and drizzle with chocolate or sprinkle with nuts, if desired. Serve immediately for the freshest taste!
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: The flavor of your strawberry shortcake sushi roll relies heavily on the freshness of your strawberries and cream cheese or mascarpone. Opt for ripe, juicy strawberries and high-quality dairy for the best taste and texture.
- Cool the Rice Completely: Ensure the sushi rice has cooled completely before assembling the roll. Warm rice can melt the cream filling, making the roll difficult to handle and compromising its presentation.
- Keep the Knife Clean: When slicing the roll, use a sharp knife and wipe it clean with a damp cloth between cuts. This prevents the sticky rice and filling from smearing, giving you neat, professional-looking slices.
