Ingredients
- 8 chicken legs
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for spice)
- 1 cup barbecue sauce (your favorite brand)
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp mustard powder
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken: Pat the chicken legs dry with paper towels. In a bowl, mix salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Rub the seasoning all over the chicken legs, then drizzle with olive oil. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for deeper flavor).
- Make the Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine barbecue sauce, honey, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard powder. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
- Cooking Methods:
- Grill: Preheat the grill to medium heat. Cook chicken for 25-30 minutes, turning occasionally. During the last 10 minutes, brush with barbecue sauce, flipping frequently to caramelize.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes. Brush with sauce in the last 10 minutes.
- Slow Cooker: Place seasoned chicken in the slow cooker. Pour barbecue sauce over it and cook on low for 6-8 hours (or high for 3-4 hours). For a crispy finish, broil for 5 minutes after slow cooking.
- Serve: Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with coleslaw, cornbread, or grilled veggies. Enjoy!
Notes
1️⃣ Apply Sauce at the Right Time – If grilling or baking, brush the barbecue sauce on during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Adding it too early can cause the sugars to burn before the chicken is fully cooked.
2️⃣ Check Internal Temperature – Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part. This guarantees juicy, fully cooked chicken without overcooking.
3️⃣ Rest Before Serving – Let the chicken rest for 5-10 minutes after cooking. This helps the juices redistribute, keeping the meat tender and flavorful.
