Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 6 slices Texas Toast (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter (for homemade Texas Toast)
- 1 tsp garlic powder (for homemade Texas Toast)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sloppy Joe Mixture:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Drain excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes until softened.
- Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Mix well and let simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- Make the Texas Toast:
- For store-bought toast, bake according to package instructions until golden.
- For homemade, spread butter mixed with garlic powder on both sides of thick-cut bread. Toast on a hot skillet or griddle until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
- Place Texas Toast slices on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
- Melt the Cheese:
- Preheat your broiler on high. Place the assembled Texas Toast Sloppy Joes under the broiler for 2–3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parsley if desired. Pair with a side salad, fries, or coleslaw for a complete meal.
Notes
- Use Fresh, Crisp Texas Toast: For the best results, ensure your Texas Toast is toasted golden and crispy before adding the Sloppy Joe mixture. This prevents sogginess and enhances the dish’s texture.
- Simmer the Sauce Properly: Allow the Sloppy Joe mixture to simmer for 10–15 minutes so the flavors meld and the sauce thickens. This step is key to a rich, savory filling.
- Broil with Care: When melting the cheese under the broiler, keep a close eye on it to avoid burning. The cheese should be melted and bubbly for a perfect finish.
