Description

This Hot Fudge Chocolate Pudding Cake is a rich, self-saucing dessert that creates its luscious chocolate sauce as it bakes. With a moist, cake-like top and a gooey fudge layer underneath, this indulgent treat is perfect when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. It’s a simple, classic dessert that satisfies every chocolate lover’s cravings!

Ingredients

Scale
For the Cake Batter:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Fudge Sauce:
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ cups boiling water

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare:

    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  • Make the Cake Batter:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
    • Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until just combined. The batter will be thick.
    • Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  • Prepare the Fudge Sauce:

    • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder.
    • Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the cake batter in the dish.
    • Carefully pour the boiling water over the entire surface—do not stir. This will create the fudgy sauce as the cake bakes.
  • Bake the Cake:

    • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top looks set and firm but a fudgy sauce is bubbling underneath.
    • Remove from the oven and let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
  • Serve & Enjoy:

    • Scoop out warm portions, making sure to get some of the gooey chocolate sauce from the bottom.
    • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate dessert experience.

Notes

  • If you love extra fudgy cakes, add chocolate chips to the batter for more richness.
  • This cake is best enjoyed warm, as the sauce thickens and becomes extra gooey when fresh.
  • You can swap whole milk for almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
