  • Author: Olivia Hartwellen
  • Total Time: 8 minute
  • Yield: 2 sandwiches 1x

Description

The Steak Bomb Sandwich is a hearty New England classic that combines tender shaved steak, melted provolone cheese, sautéed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, and often slices of salami, all nestled within a toasted sub roll. This flavorful sandwich offers a satisfying blend of savory ingredients, making it a favorite among sandwich enthusiasts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Sandwich:

    • 1 pound shaved steak (ribeye or sirloin)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
    • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
    • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
    • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
    • 4 slices provolone cheese
    • 4 slices salami (optional)
    • 2 sub rolls, split
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Garlic Aioli:

    • ½ cup mayonnaise
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Garlic Aioli:

    • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, minced garlic, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Sauté the Vegetables:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper. Sauté until vegetables are tender and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  • Cook the Steak:

    • In the same skillet, add shaved steak. Season with salt and pepper. Cook over medium-high heat until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches:

    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Spread garlic aioli on the inside of each sub roll.
    • Layer cooked steak on the bottom half of each roll.
    • Place salami slices over the steak (if using).
    • Add sautéed vegetables on top of the salami.
    • Place provolone cheese slices over the vegetables.
    • Close the sandwiches and wrap each in aluminum foil.
  • Heat the Sandwiches:

    • Place wrapped sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted.
  • Serve:

    • Remove sandwiches from the oven, unwrap, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For an extra kick, add pickled hot peppers or a dash of hot sauce to the sandwich.
  • If shaved steak is unavailable, thinly slice a well-marbled steak against the grain.
  • To save time, jarred roasted red peppers can be used instead of sautéing fresh bell peppers.
