Description

Bread In A Bag is a kid-friendly homemade bread recipe where children mix dough inside a resealable bag, knead it by hand, and bake it into a soft golden loaf.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet rapid-rise yeast, 0.25 ounce
  • 1 cup warm water, about 105°F to 110°F
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon melted butter, optional for brushing after baking

Instructions

  1. Add 1 cup flour, sugar, and yeast to a gallon-size resealable plastic bag.
  2. Pour in warm water, seal the bag tightly, and press out extra air.
  3. Squish the bag gently until the mixture looks smooth and combined.
  4. Let the sealed bag rest on the counter for 10 minutes, or until the mixture looks foamy.
  5. Open the bag and add 1 more cup flour, olive oil, and salt.
  6. Seal the bag again and squish until the dough thickens.
  7. Add the final 1 cup flour, seal the bag, and mix until a soft dough forms.
  8. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.
  9. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  10. Cover the pan and let the dough rise for 30 minutes, or until puffy.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the loaf turns golden brown.
  12. Brush with melted butter if desired, then cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  1. Use warm water, not hot water, so the yeast can rise properly.
  2. Double-bag the dough if young children will press firmly on the bag.
  3. Add only a light dusting of flour while kneading to keep the bread soft.
  4. Let the bread cool before slicing so the crumb sets neatly.
  5. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight bag at room temperature for up to 2 days.
