Description

This homemade version of Chick-fil-A’s Banana Pudding is rich, creamy, and loaded with fresh bananas, vanilla wafers, and a luscious vanilla pudding base. It’s the perfect Southern-style dessert with layers of flavor and a light, fluffy texture.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pudding:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Layers:

  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 (11 oz) box vanilla wafers (such as Nilla Wafers)
  • 2 cups whipped topping (or homemade whipped cream)

Instructions

  • Make the Pudding: In a saucepan, whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat. Stir until the mixture thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Temper the Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly add a ladle of the hot milk mixture into the yolks while whisking constantly. Gradually return the egg mixture to the saucepan and continue cooking for 2–3 minutes until thick.
  • Finish the Pudding: Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and butter. Let the pudding cool slightly.
  • Layer the Dessert: In a trifle dish or serving bowl, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and pudding. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
  • Top with Whipped Cream: Spread whipped topping evenly over the pudding.
  • Chill & Serve: Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, let the pudding chill overnight.
  • Use slightly underripe bananas to prevent browning.
  • Crushed vanilla wafers make a great crunchy topping.
