Description
This homemade version of Chick-fil-A’s Banana Pudding is rich, creamy, and loaded with fresh bananas, vanilla wafers, and a luscious vanilla pudding base. It’s the perfect Southern-style dessert with layers of flavor and a light, fluffy texture.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Pudding:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ¼ tsp salt
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
For the Layers:
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 (11 oz) box vanilla wafers (such as Nilla Wafers)
- 2 cups whipped topping (or homemade whipped cream)
Instructions
- Make the Pudding: In a saucepan, whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat. Stir until the mixture thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
- Temper the Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly add a ladle of the hot milk mixture into the yolks while whisking constantly. Gradually return the egg mixture to the saucepan and continue cooking for 2–3 minutes until thick.
- Finish the Pudding: Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and butter. Let the pudding cool slightly.
- Layer the Dessert: In a trifle dish or serving bowl, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and pudding. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
- Top with Whipped Cream: Spread whipped topping evenly over the pudding.
- Chill & Serve: Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.
Notes
- For extra flavor, let the pudding chill overnight.
- Use slightly underripe bananas to prevent browning.
- Crushed vanilla wafers make a great crunchy topping.
